Default Epson Stylus Photo R1800

I have read quite a few post on here regarding which is the best printer to buy for heat transfers. I thought I was going to go with the Epson C88 or C88+ , until I thought about what exactly I want to do. I know I want the option of printing and pressing on larger than 8 x 11 paper. Which led me into looking at other Epson printers with this capability.

I was looking at the Epson Stylus Photo 1400, until I noticed it uses dye ink. From what I read and understand on the Epson site the R1800 uses pigment ink, actually Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss® Pigment Ink. I read good thinks about the Durabrite cartridges and basically was hoping in getting some specific feedback and those with the R1800 printer that are printing and pressing on sizes of 11" x 17", 12" x 12" and 13" x 19". Also are the UltraChrome Hi-Gloss ink cartridges good for heat transfers.

I have searched and read as many post about this printer here as I could find, and decided to just post with my specific questions, I hope this is ok. If someone can help in answering my questions, I would deeply appreciate it, as I am gearing up to get into the T-Shirt business and just want to make sure I start off the right equipment. BTW, I also plan on getting the Phoenix Phire 16 X 20 press!

Thanks everyone. I am so glad I stumbled accross T-ShirtForums.com This site is invaluable for someone just starting up.

I was reading a thread about ink jet vs. laser printers and this was one reply, thought it might help...

um......no, not a hobbyist here i use inkjet. it's what i have, it does beautiful work, but i have a friend who's recently branched out and bought a color laser - we printed the same image, side by side, and i gotta tell ya - my colors were better. i'm using ultrachrome inks - and get almost no fading. and yes, it's more expensive, but i'm not trying to compete with bulk producers pricing, so the difference hasn't been a real issue for me.

I've been using the OEM inks with my R1800. There is virtually no fading after washing using TJII paper. The down side is trying to get the colors right after pressing. I use a basic adjustment to to colors to get started but each picture requires tweaking. It's a long process. I hope to switch over to a good ink soon. (It prints beautiful photos!!)

I appreciate the replies Costanza Tees and moondane, sounds like a good printer than, especially since I will be using the Epson cartridges. Either of you ever printed on anything above 8.5 X 11?
