Cool Newbie Queries about industry?

Hey guys im new to this whole industry - i basically saw tshirts for sale and decided i could design better.

However, im trying to get to grips with all the terminolgy

I know what a heat press is etc but its some of the other words and techniques i struggle with as im sure some other noobs do

Basically can i just ask -

What is sublimation?
What is screen printing?
What is plasticol?

Im just starting out and i just bought some transfer paper from the local superstore and used my colour prnter but now im looking for a superior finish! I want it to look like its in the shirt and be flexible as if its part of the shirt and durable. Any suggestions on paper i could try?

Eventually i want to buy a better printer, heat press etc but for now im doing everything by hand

Cheers

Alex

Each major section of the forums has a FAQ thread at the top of it: that would be a good place to start. Then you can ask specific questions about the parts you don't get.

Quote:
What is plasticol
it is plastisol.. it is an ink. The ink is placed on a shirt either by screenprinting it directly on a shirt or placing it on a release paper and pressing on a shirt from the paper. Which a lot of us do that do not do screenprinting directly. We get or plastisol transfers done by other companies. I alway find it interesting that someone say they could design better. Then who? What designs? Do you realize the number of designs you would have to have seen to make such a statement. Especially some one who knows nothing about the industry. But now your here and you will receive an education. By the way what software are you using to do your designs? Do you have illistrator? do you have corel? Have you ever designed a tee shirt? Did take an art class? By the way did you know that there are over 21,000 members here that do tee shirts? Can't wait to see your designs.

Thanks for the advice guys - im really just starting out in the whole t shirt industry thing. I confess i dont know a lot but im self learning day by day through peers such as yourselves and trial and error. I have studied art throughout my highschool and college years and have always had a high level of interest in graffiti art by the likes of a UK artists called Banksy aswell as more conventional forms of canvas based art. However, over the last few months my attention has been drawn (excuse the pun) onto the fascinating world of fashion wear. I started doodling some designs which recieved plaudits from my friends so i decided to try it out. I watched a few internet videos and read some google texts then one day just gave it a whirl! From then on i have been hooked and i am currently looking to improve the quality of my finished product with the help from people likes yourselves.

I am currently drawing my designs, scanning them onto my computer and using corel draw to perfect them then printing them off onto transfer paper and ironing them on (although i am currently searching for a heat press). As well as this i also have staretd customising the t shirts by distressing and using different stitching methods i am learning. As well as this im looking to find a good embroidery service as i am looking into deisnging and stiching my own polo shirts etc. so they can put my logo onto the brest of the shirts.

Look forward to sharing more with you and thanks for the warm welcome

Alex
