Exclamation should I buy my own heat press or sub it out? Can I duplicate vintage heat transfers?

Hi guys, Im brand new to the forum and new to the whole world of t-shirt sales. I have a couple of quick questions. Im located in the midwest and have found a few online distributors that carry heat transfers that Im positive would sell well in my area.

If Im wanting to get started selling shirts made almost exclusively with heat transfers would it be most cost effective to just buy a good heat press and blanks? Or would it be better to find a place (in china or Sai Pan etc) that could do it for me?

Also, I've bought some really neat vintage heat transfers from the 70's, is there any easy way to duplicate them so I can use them repeatedly or are they all a 1 shot deal? Whats the trick to this?

I've heard from the distributor I want to buy heat transfers from that if I have a retail store I can sell more designs than I can online (i.e. Muppets, Transformers) apparently these only really violate copyright laws when sold online? Is this correct?

So do places exist that will allow me to mail them the heat transfers and then they apply them and drop ship the product to my customers? Or is this a bigger pain that its worth and should I suck it up and buy my own heat press?
Any help would be great! Thanks guys!!

Default Re: 1st Post with a Couple Questions Please :)

first welcome...the following is just my thoughts...do not take as legal of business recommendations!
My preference is to have my own heat press (can get a decent one for under $700) and press most of my own. To outsource overseas involves too much trouble with shipping, custom clearances, delays..etc.. you can outsource her by using some forum members...or others in your area, whether it is for transfers or screen printing or DTG.

I am not aware of a way to duplicate transfers...what you see is what you get..a one time use transfer.. careful in redoing transfers..just be aware there may be some copyright or trademark issues

I think you can sell more shirts etc in a store than online BUT...you have to factor in the overhead...rent, util, insurance etc...in the end the more sales may not equal more net profit...certainly not at first.

Copyright laws are violated if you use copyright material whether it is online or in a store...

Yes there are places that will do custom transfers...search the forum for some of those places...

and last...I never ...let me repeat NEVER have items dropped shipped to my customers. I want to inspect the property first...making sure the quality is good and the transfers/imprints are correct...and then get to have face time with my customer to show I appreciate their business...

I am sure you will hear more....perhaps better...info from more experience members

I agree never let any one drop ship to your customers.I want to see what they are getting. If my rep is at stake,I want to see the finished product. This is the way, I coduct business. .....JB

To re-sell ? NOT without a license.

I think you can buy these vintage re-makes and "New Vintage" type transfers to re-sell from Bang-on: :: DESIGN CATALOGUE - ROCK ::

even the Molson's Beer Logos etc: :: DESIGN CATALOGUE - MOLSON ::, extremely hard to find.

I think the original vintage transfers from years ago are sort of expensive now, rare, more for collectors not for re-sell in bulk because there are not may of them.

Yes, it's cost effective. While "most cost effective" is another matter... given the low cost of professional equipment outsourcing would have trouble competing (depends how much your time is worth - if your day job pays $75/hr it's not going to be cost effective to do it yourself... but in that case you could buy the press and hire an employee).

That depends. Are you in the midwest of China, the midwest of the USA or somewhere else? Because it's not going to be cheaper to pay international shipping than it is to do it yourself.

Not legally.

1) More quantity, yes. 2) More range, possibly; not everybody who wants to sell licensed transfers will be granted permission, those with physical stores are more likely to be.

But the copyright thing... no. If someone told you that, tell them they're an idiot and don't trust anything they tell you in future.

They do exist, though it's not the route I would choose to take if I were in your situation (at that point you're skimming too much of the profit off to other people, though admittedly you're also not doing much work so perhaps it balances out).
