Default Bottom platen of heat press. rubber or metal?

If you are doing stantard t-shirts on your heat press, what should be on the bottom platen of your heat press? I have a used one and it has a flat metal piece, with a 1/2" or so rubber piece on top, then wrapped in vinyl. Quite often I have to rub the graphic with a hot pad or something to get it to stick well. Should I go without the rubber piece?

Thanks
Chase

All the presses I have seen have a rubber pad but not wraped in vinyl?

yeah the wraped in vinyl thing got me too.. If you are having to rub the transfer to get it to stick.. i would increase the pressure..
my heat press has the rubber pad too.. but its not removable.

Gotcha. Yeah my new place i've been getting transfers from works pretty good, it's my old place that is tough. When you pull the press down, does it physically take effort, and it's hard to go down, or is it fairly easy and not much effort?

Pressure is adjustable. If I set my pressure to medium it is fine for me but my wife who is much smaller can't even lock it down.

I don't have a light/medium/hard or anything to tell me what that would be. I just turn the knob until it "feels" good to me. Thats why I was wondering what a medium should feel like. I guess more than even the press it's been the individual transfers from the different companies that make the biggest difference on how to make them.

when you say the bottom is wrapped in vinyl could it be a teflon cover that is on over the rubber pad for protection? As far as adjusting the pressure, you can turn it all the way to the left and count the turns to the right untill you can;t turn any more and the half way number would be medium.I normally adjust by the feel of the handle when I pull it down. .... Good luck.... JB
