Default Dark Wear

I don't seem to do too well with the dark wear transfers they are from a local company near my home near Sydney Australia.
I find peeling them off the backing paper tricky and tedious and often end up damaging the transfer. They also scratch really easily if you accidently touch the printed image. The they don't seem to stick really well on the shirts and I hate the hand that they have compared to what i get on the white shirts with light wear transfers(from the same company). As my designs are aimed at the teen market who like the darker shirts i am feeling a tad frustrated with the whole black shirt heat pressing.
I feel that screen print transfers may be the way to go but having limited funds to spread over everything I am not sure what to do. Is there anyone out there using dark wear that can give me some hints. I am printing the transfers using my Epson Stylus 1160 for larger images or epson 350 for smaller a4 images. I have a heap of black shirts and dark wear transfers that are gathering dust until I can figure this one out.
