Arrow DuraCotton HT... how is it working for you?

I have tried to be a "good newbie" by reading every single post regarding DuraCotton HT before posting questions... however there seems to be a lot of gaps.

There are many posts that say "I am going to try it... will let you know the results.", then there is no additional posting from that person 2-3 months later.

Also... there are people that seem to try it once or twice, don't have good results, then simply post a negative comment or just give up after a few attempts.

However, from what I have read... it seems to take a bit of tweaking to get the temp and pressure (even toner levels) "just right" and achieve Zero Hand, Zero Cutting results.

I have also read that transfers can look great after pressing... but it's not until the garment is washed that you realize the pressure and/or temp is off... i.e. fading due to the polymer not being driven into the shirt fibers deep enough, too much toner being put down by the laser printer, etc...

This concerns me... since I plan on selling online... so getting a consistant print that washes well is important. ... and since my designs have a lot of blank space in them that cannot be trimmed, getting zero cut is important too.

With that being said...

1. If you have used DuraCottonHT long enough to work through the kinks (i.e. finally getting the pressure/heat/time right for your particular press)... can you please give us an update?

2. Did you do washability testing to confirm that the settings work "post wash"?

3. I plan on using this paper on Gildan 6.1oz White, Ash, and Sport Grey tees... is the Sport Grey light enough to still achieve zero cut?

4. Any other comments suggestions?

Again, if you have worked past the "learning curve" of the DuraCottonHT and are using these papers on a regular basis, please post your experiences.

I am sure I am not the only one that has "combed through" the DuraCotton posts and still has questions.

Thank you very much for your help.

Sincerely,

Brett

OK... a week later and no replies.

Hmmm....

Is no one actively using this paper?

Or are the ones using it just too busy to check these forums?

Or ????

You need to use Photo Trans Image Clip, it is the closest thing to screen printing there is, maybe better (much softer image than screen print) The polymer is removed surrounding the image via a pre-press so there are no problems with it at all. The DuraCotton is a great product, I have used samples of the paper and it works really well, good color, good washability etc. I did not switch to it because it was not any better than the product I was using at the time. The problem with DuraCotton (and the product I was using at the time) is that when the shirt is washed with softners or bleach it discolors the polymer, it turns a greyish color. I was not pleased with this that is why I made the switch to image clip about a year ago and have done thousands of shirts with it. I always do several for myself and wash them constantly (some probably 50-60 times) and they still look great. I still use the DuraCotton type product occassionally for photo type things where I can trim the image easily, but otherwise it is all image clip. Hope that helps.

There can be a few reasons for zero responses:
  • the people that have answers to your questions aren't around to see your post
  • the questions you've asked have been answered many times so they figure you'll find the answers using the search
  • nobody has an answer
  • the question was worded in a way that made it harder to answer (lots of questions in the same post, lots of wording in the post that makes it hard to answer quickly, etc)
You can see some positive results with duracottonht and pictures/washtests here: DuraCottonHT (Was going to use dye sub)

And here: New CLC DuraCottonHT Report

and here: Ironall VS Duracotton HT > Comparison

I agree that the duracotton paper seems to have a lot of people testing and tweaking. The original duracotton98 thread is full of those type posts (although that thread started with duracotton98 - a different product - and only at the end of the thread talked about the improved ht version of the paper)

There's a lot of testing involved in any t-shirt printing process (from heat transfers, to screen printing to direct to garment printing).
