Default Here come the Newbie questions ;)

I have been doing Dye Sublimation for a couple years now, and after purchasing all the equipment to do screen printing I decided it was too messy and time consuming for me right now.

So I have decided to try the Heat Transfers

I purchased a bunch of misc transfers off from E-bay and I have started trying to transfer them to shirts....

HELP! I am pretty much destroying all of my shirts, and I went by the guidelines I was given for the transfers.

Some for 8 seconds and some for 12 seconds.

Each time I pull the transfers off they seem very very sticky and dont completly come off onto the shirt.

Am I heating too long? too short? is there a way to tell?

Is there a guide to tell me which transfer is which? (Screen printed, Puff?)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated...

Sorry, I know I am asking quesitons that others have probably asked but I couldnt find any direct answers with my search.

Thanks for your time.

Carl

When you purchased the transfers did they not tell you what type of transfers they were? Could be you have some puff and they are sometimes hard to work with, just depends. Also could be some are cold peel or warm peel. I would try to contact the person from whom you purchased from and see if they can give you that info, the type of transfer would help you in regards to when to peel. You might also want to see if you can get who made them, if they are from proworld then you can do a search from their website and get the info for the transfer.

I did get some information from them. The companies that make them are: Springhill, Thunder Sportswear, Dowling, Global, Air waves, XIT

I have gotten like 4 shirts to successfully transfer, but that is out of like 20 shirts =( I have 2 Springhill transfers that I got to work, One was 7 seconds the other 13 seconds. I guess one is PUFF? and one isnt.

I see I have alot of terms to learn..Sorry. I wish I could look at them and know the difference. Maybe it was a bad idea to start with just buying a bunch of different ones until I learned more about them. But then again I paid lik .05 each

Thanks for the reply.

This was the e-mail I got from the guy I purchased them from. He has been very helpful in replying to me for help, Its just that following his directions dont seem to be working for me. ;( So trying to see what I am doing wrong.

Here is his e-mail to me.

Hi Carl, This is what all the Newbies go through. With SPRINGHILL and
THUNDER SPORTSWEAR transfers preheat the shirt for 5 seconds and then
press for 12 seconds and open and peel imediately. Most DOWLING and
GLOBAL transfers will print at 10 seconds and peal imediately. With AIR
WAVES and XIT transfers they print well at 8 seconds and peal
imediately. All presses are timed a little different so you will have to
experiment on some material untill you get the hang of it. When I
started I went through 3 dozen shirts in one night to get 2 shirts I
needed. That's why I try them on extra junk shirts(turned inside out to
get extra material). My presses are set at 375 degrees and never
changed. The pressure is set as high as I can stand to push it down. On
my Air Assist machine it is set at 60 pounds. If you have other
questions, I will try to help. You might want to jion a forum on the
internet called THE T-SHIRT FORUM. I learned a lot from this site.

If you know which ones are Air Waves and Dowling then you can go to their website and see what their temp says for pressing. Everyone's heat press is a little different, you might need to add more pressure, most transfers say to be set at medium to high pressure. If these were for 5 cents then at least you are testing your temp and pressure cheaply, although I would see about getting some t shirt material to practice with. Now some of what you are talking about sound like Puff, they will have more of a rubbery feel to them and will seem like they puff off the shirt, I do a forum search for puff, I seem to remember a couple threads on them. The rest sound like hot peel, press and then peel right away. Wish I could help out more but I would just practice with your temp setting and pressure settings.
