Default Heat pressing zip up hoodies

I'm getting my brand new, Hotronix 16x 16 auto open clam shell today. It's coming with the Teflon sheet and bottom platen pad. I've never used a heat press before but this is how I want to make my clothes. I've read everything I could on this forum about starting out with a heat press. I have a bunch of samples I got from Stahl's and other places that I'll try out on some thrift shop shirts and sweaters. I'd rather mess those up than a $5 good shirt! Anyway is it difficult to press a zip up hoody? Are there any tricks to doing it right ? I'm gonna take my time and do a lot of testing so I can get familiar with my new press and maybe find out some tricks on my own. Just wondering if maybe some of the others in here with more knowledge might have some pearls of wisdom?

I tried the search and found a few things but nothing in any great detail.

you have to make sure nothing is in the way of keeping the press flat when it clamps down. I should note before hand to try different methods. Practice makes perfect right?
So raise up the surface so no obstructions (zippers, the hood, strings, extra material) are in the way(you can do this with mouse pads or pillows(depending on what transfers you are using) or Print Perfect pads from Stahl's.
