Default temperature taking

i went to radio shack and got a contact less temp taker.
however it says does not work on shiny or reflective material.
So assuming they all work the same how do you use one on the platen ?

Thanks
Mark

Most platens are a flat black, so it shouldn't give you any trouble. With your press on and your platen up to temp, hold the thermometer under the platen about 6 inches aimed at the center and take a reading. Be careful not to burn yourself. It kinda hurts.
