Discuss the various aspects of heat press technology. Transfer paper, inks, plastisol transfers, vinyl cutters, printers, commercial usage, durability, suppliers, etc.
Hi, I am thinking about using my own artwork as heat transfers but I would like to see some pics of your examples first. Also, what is a good size transfer for adult shirt sizes L-2XL. I would like to see examples of opaque transfers on dark shirts as well as light garment transfers. Since I'm just starting out, would the epson C88 with OEM inks be a good choice along with the Geo Knight 12x14 swing away?.

Thank you.
If you thinking of a 12 x 14 press then you are in fact limiting the size of the transfer to less than that size. A good middle range is the 15 x 15. Also the c88+ is capable of only printing 8 x 11 size. When you say OEM I hope you mean a bulk system with pigment inks. The pictures were all done with Iron All transfers. I have samples on my video page of opaque.

Those look great!
Are those done with Iron All?
How well does the Iron All work on light colors like pink & yellow?
Sorry if I am taking this off track.

Yes all Iron All (Old). With light colors you will see some of the background. Here is a preschool I did.

Personally, I don't think the 8x10.5 printable area you have with a small transfer is that bad; it will start to look a pretty small on a 2XL, but still reasonable. Others disagree and would advise higher =) If you can afford to work with a larger printer go for it, but if not the smaller paper won't be too bad up to 2XL (I wouldn't recommend it on anything past that).

(I can't tell if you're joking here Lou, so I'll clarify just to make sure.) OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer; in this case, it would be the original Durabrite inks that come with the C88. These inks will do fine to start with, though you may need to adjust your color profiles or the designs may look odd when pressed. You will save money in the long run if you switch over to a bulk ink system.

...just to add.
a graphic will look small when it just lays there on your work table. Once you actually print it on a shirt and look at it when someone is wearing it,....... it looks a lot bigger for some reason.
Yes, you would need screen printing equipment to make your own. But most people simply order them from a custom transfer supplier like Dowling Graphics, F & M, Versatrans, Transfer Express...
