Got my heat press... now how to start reaching customers??
ok, I have been designing, sewing and embroidering children's clothes for the last 5-6 years.. I just bought my 1st heat press.
I've got a good vendor for tees, onesies, everything.. I'm looking into stock transfers to start with...
what now? I have a website under construction, but am thinking some of the local stores might be interested.
Should I make a sample book and walk the pavement?
stick with my website?
what have people found is the best way to get started?
Sample book and walking the pavement is one way to do it - a little time consuming but it is a way to present your work to businesses that don't know you.
Website is a must - and publicize it so people will know you have one.
Networking, networking, networking - Chamber of Commerce and whatever other business related groups you can visit to get the word out.
Press release to your local paper.
Give samples of your work to influential moms for their kids to wear.
You might want to visit some local, independent retailers, that are prospects for your products. You should be prepared to offer a professional presentation using samples, price lists with photos, etc. Also, maybe working craft fairs, bazaars, and other venures of that type might prove to be successful. Regarding the website, make sure you have a decent budget to have the site created and then to advertise.

As a web guy, I'd definitely say don't abandon your website idea.
Done right, it can be a great way to reach new customers and showcase your offering to potential clients.
Even when hitting the pavement door to door, it's helpful to have a website address to leave with the buyer so they can follow up on their own time and research your company's offerings.
