Default Trouble creating 2-color font in AI

I am wanting to print a two-color font to go on a grey t-shirt. It is basic block font (Navy), and I want to outline it in white; however, I don't want the white to touch the navy so that I don't have to flash in between colors...does anyone know how to do this? I am using Adobe Illustrator CS4...

Thanks,

Jordan

Copy the Spot Navy font and send to back. Stroke the copy with a Process White(all zeroed out) at whatever size you want as the empty space between the Navy and White. Copy the just stroked object and send that one to the back. Apply a larger stroke and assign it a spot White. Adjust the numbers as you see fit.

My personal preference is to use Offset Paths as that operation creates tangible paths that you can see and grab.

Yeh, offset paths would be easiest.
