Default Text effects

I am working on a design that requires me to make the text 3D and shaded (if that makes sense).

I have always used "Effects", then extrude and adjusted to what I needed. Is there a better way that I am missing?

Next, I have never (until now) had to design a shaded font. In other words, it's starts as a solid color at the bottom of the text and disolves as it gets to the top (so that the shirt color can show through). How do I do that in Corel X3?

I know I'll need to convert to half tones for printing the film, but I need to get it shaded first.

Simple questions, I hope.

Type your text
go to your tools and choose the interactive transparency tool
left click under the text and drag to the to and adjust.

The other way is to simply choose a linear gradiet fill in your fill dialog box.
