Default Cropping images

I am struggling cropping images.

When I scan an image and transfer it into The Print Shop it allows me to freehand crop but there always seems to be an outer white line.

If I scan into Adobe Photoshop it only allows me to crop into a box (unless I am missing an option that allows freehand)

If I copy my scan to Corel Illustrator and then trace it does not allow me to crop at all (again, unless I'm missing something). If I then copy the trace file to Print Shop it won't allow me to crop the image at all.

I'm very frustrated and need to resolve this. I have been trying different ways over the last three weeks but can't seem to find a resolution or a thread that covers this topic on this forum.

Please help!!!!

sounds like it's time to break out the manuals on your software.

haven't heard of 'the print shop' so can't help you there. in photoshop you can use the pen tool to go around an object, then turn it into a selection and also crop images that way. when you scan an image it is a bitmap file. a bitmap file can be 'placed' into illustrator not scanned into. that bitmap image must then be turned into a vector image by live trace to be edited.

corel illustrator? it's one or the other.

Thanks. I have managed to live trace in Corel but it sounds like I need to then copy the edited version to Photoshop to crop. I will try your suggestion.

If you put an image in Corel/AI and draw a path above, select both and 'make mask' or 'create clipping path', it will apparently crop your image. The image is still there but is selectively masked.

Also in Corel draw, if you have already traced it you can then ungroup the image. This will make it to where each piece is seperate. Once you ungroup you can always just edit out the parts you dont want.

I believe any bitmap image in Printshop will always have white background around the image.

Are you just trying to get rid of the white background? Here is what you can do in Photoshop:

1) Make sure the layer is not a background layer. To change it to a layer that the background can be transparent is to double click on the layer in the layer dialog box. Then click OK when a dialog box pops in.

2) Click the Magic wand tool or press W.
3) Change the Tolerance to 10 pixels.
4) Click on the background or anywhere in the white area around the image.
5) Press delete so that the background will become transparent.

The hard way in Photoshop:
1) Click and hold on the Lasso tool until a fly out selection is displayed then click on the Magnetic lasso or pess and hold shift then press L until the Magnetic lasso is selected.
2) Click and trace around the image. Magnetic lasso will snap on the image as you move the mouse around. You can undo a segment by pressing backspace key.
3) When the selection is complete
4) Click Edit then Crop.

In CorelDraw:
1) Import the bitmap file.
2) Make sure the image is selected.
3) Click Bitmaps command tool.
4) Click Convert to Bitmap
5) When the dialog box appears you can change the resolution or leave it as it is.
6) Click the check boxes under the Options which are Anti-aliasing and Transparent Background.
7) If in doubt you can test and make sure the background is transparent type a text on the white background.
8) Press Ctrl Page up or Ctrl Page down.
9) If the text disappears that means the background is not transparent.
10) I can guarantee you that the background is transparent.

Hard way in CorelDraw:
1) Import the bitmap image
2) Draw a closed outline around the image that you want to crop with.
3) Select the image.
4) Click Effects command menu.
5) Click Powerclip.
6) Click Place indside container.
7) Click on the closed outline.
8) You can move the image inside the outline by using the Edit contents tool of Powerclip.
9) Move the bitmap then use the Finish editng this level tool of Powerclip
10) Use the test mentioned in the previous method (Steps 7, 8 & 9).

Let me ask you why you even bother with Printshop when you have Photoshop, Corel and AI? The later 3 are more powerful and efficient than Printshop.

Sunny,

You are welcome. This is what the forum is all about help each other.

Another alternative method of Powerclip tool that I forgot to mention for CorelDraw is Bitmap can be cut with closed outline:

1) Create a closed outline
2) Press and hold the Shift key.
3) Click on the closed outline then click on the bitmap image (make it is done in this order).
4) Click Intersect tool
5) Click on the original image and press delete. The part of the cut image will be inside the outline.
6) Click on the outline and press delete.

Thank you very much for your help I am going to try each of your suggestions and see which works best.

I bought Printshop in the beginning and then got Photoshop and Corel I. when I bought my Wacom pen tablet. I can see that there is much more potential with my newer programs.

I guess we have to learn by our mistakes. Everyones help is invaluable as I did not get manuals with the free software.

When you say Corel I is it a very fundamental vector graphics editor? The reason I am asking is the Corel that came with my Wacom pad was Corel Photopaint Elements. It is not the vector editor the methods I suggested will not work. If it is Photopaint elements you can use the Photoshop methods. Photopaint mimics Photoshop the tools are named and located that are different from Photopaint. Check the built in help menu to find the tools and usage similar to Photoshop.

One more thing about cropping. Some file types support transparency (like PDFs.) If you crop an image by selecting and cropping (or trimming) and then save the file as a Photoshop PDF, your background will maintain the transparency. JPEGs don't do this.

Hope this helps.

A PDF is like a wrapper, there is still a bitmap inside. I assume the internal file type would be PSD or similar.
