[Photoshop] - im having difficulty adding effects to text

Default im having difficulty adding effects to text

Hey guys im having trouble adding effects like distress and other effects to text while using photoshop and illustrator. Does anyone have any suggestions or can tell me how to do this. Thanks to all for all your help.

In Photoshop:
Rasterize the text by right-clicking on the text layer. Add any effects in the filter menu.
You could also add some effects by clicking on the "fx" button at the bottom of the layer pallette. Make sure you select the text layer. You shouldn't need to rasterize to use these effects.

In Illustrator:
Try "Warp" under the Effects menu, also SVG Filters...and you could also use the preset swatches for pattern and textured fills.

Distressed layers are usually used to give the effect in AI, you can find them on google.
