Default Is it OK to design your own cancer ribbon shirt to sell?

I have a design I created just for my mom and stepmom. I gave it to them on mothers day. They like them so much they want me to sell them to a relay-for-life group, or some similar type organization.

I've been holding off because I don't know if it is legal. Seems like the organization should get the money instead. I could always donate the profits, but I would need to cover costs on that many shirts.

Is it legal to use the cancer ribbons in your designs? Is there copyright on colored ribbons with the cancer name together? Even if you do your own graphic, is there some reason you should not create a cancer ribbon shirt and sell it for your own profit?

I see vendors selling cancer awareness products of all sorts, so it seems like free range. But things are not always what they seem.

It is most likely trademarked, though I don't know for sure.

To be safe, I would check with the American Cancer Society.

im sure they are not going to have a problem if you put your own swing on it to support people you know with or that have had cancer. just tell them you are going to donate some of the money back to them and give them like 10 or 20% of the proceeds

pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness by Carol Sutton

I just came across this site. There are lots of ribbons and lots of info. Scroll to the bottom to see what she says about using the ribbons (not saying you are looking for a ribbon). I don't know if the ribbon is protected or not. I scratched the surface by googling it. You should dig deeper.

We have had the same problem. We have also held off until we found out something. Let me know what you find out and I will do the same. We were going to donate the majority of the profits to a foundation for breast cancer, but do not want any trouble with it either. Thanks for the post!!

The pink ribbon considered world wide to be an international symbol for breast cancer. The pink ribbon is ubiquitous, or seeming to exist everywhere at once, and be omnipresent. No one company or organization or foundation owns the rights to this worldwide symbol. However, individual pink ribbon designers can hold all rights reserved on their copyright, for example Avon has its own, as does Estee Lauder. But only on your design.

Each design is its own copyright. You have copyright plus 'All Right Reserved' on your own pink ribbon.

No one owns the red ribbon design for SIDS/ AIDS, except their own unique design.

Thanks Mark. I guess that explains why you see this type of product everywhere. Especially jewelry.
