basically...vector graphics are defined by mathematical equations which place lines, curves and other shapes on the screen. Since mathematics are used to "draw" the image, you can scale a vector graphic to any size and not loose image quality. On the other hand, a Raster (or Bitmap) image is not defined by mathematics, but rather by actual pixels. If you try to make a Raster image larger, you get a blurred (pixelated) image.

I did a search on google "vaster vs raster" and found this link that was pretty informative.

Raster Images versus Vector Images

if you save your art as a corel draw file, that will be a vector image.

I under stand vector art and it is the only way to do art. But if you do a print cut in Cut Studio you must frist convert your artwork to jpeg then import to Cut Studio, then convert it back to vertor art. Could someone Help me? Roland seems not to under stand the conflit. Oh I forgot to mention that Cut Studio does a very poor job with its converting to vector art.
Thanks

You can save it as an .AI file from corel which is vector.

I have also just started to play with corel and I think if you save it as a corel draw file it will be vector also.

Are you creating your art in cut studio? If so why? I have the flexi 8 system and only use it for cutting. The designing part is limitted at best when compared to My graphics software (illy, ps, x4).

Have you tried saving as a pdf? I know my flexi program works great with PDF files on my plotter but does not do well with vector files.

I dont know if any of this makes sense but hope it helps in some way.

Shapes made in vector files are all made from scalable straight lines. Even the smallest circles use several straight lines to create the circles. A slightly crocked line, will have a stair step look if you zoom in real close.

I would assume the apps use mathematics to determine the length of the lines and how many lines there should be in order to make the shape. Also when scaling the shape, it would use mathematics to determine how to change the lines and how many lines to add/reduce.

Illustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand (to name a few) are all vector programs. I can't speak much from experience with CD and FH, but in Illustrator if you save as a .ai file (adobe illustrator), a .eps or even a PDF file from it, the file is vector.

Note that you can have vector elements (items from a vector file) in a raster file. You can also have raster elements (items from a raster file made from ex. Photoshop) in a vector file.

More confused? Sorry.

Why arent you designing in flexi as its so much more intuitive than AI or Corel for vector files. You mention design is limited but thats just not the case. Working with vector files in flexi is so simple and straight to cut with bitmap tools. Just wondering ?

Probably because I am used to using illy and am currently learning X4. Flexi came with my cutter/plotter. tried some of the aps but decided to just use it as a cut program. I may not have dug deep enough into the program to find its potential but then I dont need it to be a design program either since I am familiar with illy. Just need it to tell the cutter plotter what to do.

I was just curious because if you have the full blown version of flexi its quite a powerful app.

I have the same problem with photoshop.

I agree flexi is very powerful. It is good especially if you do printed vinyl for signs, decals or wraps. I myself did not find it intuitive but found illy to be intuitive. That makes flexi a limitting program for me at this time. Difference in personal background and abilities I guess. I just choose for now to stick with illy and play with X4. If by some stroke of dumb luck I am able to fund a large format printer in the future I will definately use more of the flexi software for that type of work. It is a shame I know to have software that is quite expensive go underutilized but I have pretty much completed my software collection at this point so hopefully no matter what I buy equipment wise I will be able to use it efficiently. With some practice of course

Matt,
Creating the Art work is no problem, I do it in Corel. My problem is getting into cut studio as vector Art.
The Print cut portion will only let you bring in Jpeg level Artwork. I,m not cutting vinyl I,m cutting
heat transfers that I am printing from my printer, then cutting out like a silhouette keeping the Artwork
clean and sharp. Cut Studio is not clean and sharp. My Roland GX24 uses crop marks for reference and the cutter does not recognize Corels or AI,s crop marks. I don,t think at this point any thing will work. Thanks for the help,
