Will I need Fastrip software to make heat transfers on the epson R1400?

Nope. Fastrip is a program used to produce halftone dots for printing gradient color shades on a non post script printer. I would think you may need to change the inks though if they aren't a pigment ink. I don't have a 1400 so I don't know if they use dye, or pigment inks. Dye inks will fade drastically, & quickly with washing.

Thank you Groggman for the information. I read up on the R1900 and am now thinking about purchasing the 1900. I believe it does use pigment ink.

Sounds like a good choice if only going to t-shirt tansfers. Will need dye sub if going to do mugs or tiles.

The 1400 is water rest. dye ink...Claria. You can purchase pigment heat transfer inks for the printer.

I use the 1400 with the original dye ink till it ran out and then installed refillable cartridges but still use the Claria compatible dye ink. I use JPSS paper for white and Alpha Gold for dars and colors. I have no problems with either and good to great results.
