Exclamation how to size a font to be that large but keep its crisp/smooth edges

Hey everyone!
Thanks in advance for any help/advice anyone can offer me on this...

So I had a logo that I was going to put on a shirt, just a font sized to 16 inches wide, 12 inches tall. I used Photoshop CS3, saved it on a disc and took it to kinkos to have printed out. When I got it back it looked super pixelated. They didn't resize it or anything. When I got home I zoomed in with photoshop and noticed that it does appear a little pixelated when zoomed in.

So my question is, should I be using Illustrator instead? I have Illustrator CS4. I can type the same font, same size, and zoom in and it doesn't appear pixelated as it does in Photoshop. But will this still apply when being printed out? Is there a certain printing option that I'm unaware of? I do not want my screens to look pixaleted.

I guess to sum it all up I'm just trying to figure out how to size a font to be that large but keep its crisp/smooth edges and not appear like you resized it in MSpaint.
Please help!
Turtorials, or explanations, anything!
Many thanks everyone!

When you use PS the image is defined as pixels, therefore if you have an image of 100dpi and double the size it has only 50dpi at print size. Which is where the pixelation comes in.
AI defines the text in terms of points joined by lines, therefore if you scale it a million times it will still be smooth and good looking. Like me...

okay so I'm running into another problem...

I figure it's probably best to just redo the whole thing using illustrator.

In photoshop, you can type your font, flatten the image and then erase parts of the font if you want... But in Illustrator I can't figure out how to 'flatten' or make it able to erase parts...
I found 'flatten artwork' in the layers panel but it still wont let me erase any of the font!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, any advice?

Thanks for the reply!

Using Illustrator, instead of flattening the text. Right click the text, scroll down on the tab that opens and find 'Create Outlines' click that. You will now be able to erase the font. hope that helps

In photoshop, when you create a new document, just make sure you set the resolution to 300 dpi/ppi
By default, I think it's at 72.

khoffman85?

i just wanted to help you...did you do what grimey clothing told you to do?
i have AI cs4 and turning the fonts into outlines is way to go.
from their you can send the file to others even when they don't have that font style on their computer,
you can resize, delete whaever you want!

good luck,
andy
