Default Photoshope CS2/CS4 questions...thanks in advance

couple questions about Photoshop CS2...

I am currently using an epson 1400 with the oem ink and will be switching over to the CIS pigment ink (heat transfer) from inkjetfly.com very soon...also, using JPSS mainly and hotronix 16x20 swinger...on to the questions!

1) are there any settings i should consider before printing...i have had problems with my reds being very dark once printed. should I be setting something up differently as far as settings go (dpi, print quality, resolution, CMYK?, etc.)?

2) also, i use CS2 right now and have the CS4 disc ready to be downloaded...FMExpressions requires CS2 or earlier for custom plastisol transfers...so will installing CS4 wipe out my CS2 or no? and if not will my files be compatible for both?

3) any other suggestions or recommendations. i am usually asking questions in the heat transfer forum but wanted to hop over here to ask these questions.

4) should i be learning Illustrator for this type of applications and transfer method? also, whats the difference between illustrator and imageready?

thanks folks, just scratching the surface with Adobe here.

I don't know much about the inkjet side of things, but for making art, I would highly, highly suggest getting and learning adobe illustrator. Illustrator makes vector files which you can scale to any size you need with no distortion. When I first started getting into illustrator some years ago, it seemed new, foreign, and clumsy, but now I could never live without it. Perhaps go to youtube and check out some adobe illustrator tutorial videos to see some of the basics and what can be done with a good vector program I've only used imageready for animated .gifs so I don't know too much about that program.

Photoshop for bitmaps, Illustrator for vectors and ImageReady for animated gifs.
You should be able to add the new version of Photoshop without losing the old, but make sure that you have the disc handy just in case.
Colours - standardise what you're doing and use an icc profile to control your colours.

You don't really need to worry about the version of Photoshop. It's backwards compatible but F&M probably just decided to put it in their spec anyway since that's probably what they're still using. It certainly matters with Illustrator, but with Photoshop, it will only matter if you're using features that were only introduced in CS4, and you shouldn't be giving them any kind of art with advanced layering effects anyway. Your art should be simple so they won't have to "work" on it to get it separated and printed.

You can also have multiple versions of Photoshop installed at once, but at work I have CS4 and CS3 and I can't bear Photoshop CS4 and they are both fighting for which will open files and it's a pain. As for creating graphics, it's always good to know as many applications as possible, but with good skill you can produce the same quality of art with Photoshop that you can with Illustrator as far as t-shirt graphics goes.
