I currently have a Logitech MX 1000 which is pretty wore out. It's an okay mouse. I've been using Logitech mice for the last fifteen years but my favorite mouse of all time was an Intellimouse, which I've heard are once again very good.
I never used to pay much attention to the mouse but now that I'm doing more graphical work I thought there might be some better than others.
I definitely want an optical mouse.
Wireless is nice but not required.
Should I really consider a tablet? I used tablets years ago when doing CAD and loved them but they are so expensive.
Wacom Tablet is the way to go. I use my Intuos3 9x12 for all my graphics. In Illustrator, Photoshop, and even for my 3d work in Maya and Zbrush. But they can be little pricey. So its good to start off with a small one to get used to it.
Also, I think the best mouse in the market is the Logitech MX Revolution. I got mine a year and a half ago and love it. You can find them for around $85 bucks now.
I have a logitech G5 and a Wacom tablet... the Wacom was 100 bucks on sale for 80... I use the G5 most of the time... for PShop/Illustrator/3dmax and Vue6 and Bryce 6... Someday i will try and get used to the Wacom... many people swear by the tablets... I ate paint chips as a kid though...
One thing I have learned from my teenager - if you want the best graphics, best mouse, best mouse pad (yes they make a diffeence) look what gamers use - www.razerzone.com - - these things are incredible.

Years ago I had a Boomslang and it was way too large for my hands, the palm rest jacked way up and the buttons too low, it held the wrist at an uncomfortable angle. I used it for a couple of weeks and sold it on ebay. They might be better designed now but no stores near me carry them to try them out.
The Logitechs I like but find them a little short.
