Default width of design

Hello,

I have different sizes of tee, from girl medium to guy xlarge. I have no budget to make different plates for silkscreen. I would like to know is there a golden rule on how wide the design should be? What's the perfect graphic size that will fit nicely from girl to guy?

Thanks
mag

Obviously nothing is going to fit perfectly from a girl's medium (roughly 16" wide) to a guy's extra large (roughly 24" wide).

I'd try sizing it as large as you possibly can for the girl's medium, printing it on a piece of paper, and seeing how it looks on the guy's xl. For some designs that can work, for some it will look ridiculous.
