Default graphics design program for beginners?

What is a good graphic design program that could help me make designs that I have in my head but I can't draw out?

I have a lot of designs in my head that I can't seem to draw out on paper. I blame computers for my loss in basic drawing skills. My only solution is to get a Wacom tablet. Maybe draw some quick sketches and find an artist that will work cheap to get you some artwork. You still have to draw it up on the computer and unless you're great with a mouse, it might be tough.

There is no graphics program that can do this for you.

I don't know what to say. You'll have to develop some sort of artistic ability. Graphics programs are only tools, like paint or pencils or anything else. The learning curve is very wide with these programs...wider, I'd argue, than learning to draw on paper or something.

I use Photoshop and Illustrator.

I use ballpoint pen, a scanner* and Inkscape.

You can get Inkscape (for free!) here:

http://www.inkscape.org

I've posted a quick tutorial here:

botaday.blogspot.com/2006/10/how-to-hack-bw-image-into-t-shirt.html (How to Hack a B&W Image into a T-shirt)

*If you don't have a scanner, a half-way decent digital camera is a good substitute

Good Luck!

This is going to depend on the person. I found it much easier to learn to use Photoshop with decent proficiency than I ever did drawing well on paper. Granted, I've used computers a good portion of my life, and been online nearly half of it, but... =)

I think it depends even more on the teacher. I have a computer background more than anything, but doing life drawing on paper improved my drawing skills more than any amount of computer based drawing ever could have, I'm sure. Having the right teacher helped; I've had bad drawing teachers and good drawing teachers, and the difference is monumental.

Everyone should have basic drawing and color theory skills. Will ultimately help with rendering on the computer. Plus, sometimes you just cannot get the effect you want using the comp so hand rendering and scanning is the more viable option.

You need to get the right software and learn. It may take a week or a month but you will be rewarded for reading and working with examples. I spend 30 minutes a day trying different things with my programs and learn from that. I am mentor to several people from this forum who ask me questions about doing certain things. if I don't have the answer, I go looking for it or try to figure out what to do to help my student. Don't be afraid of the software. Just get the right software.

Another decent program is Fireworks from Adobe alot of people have found Fireworks to be easier to learn for the general graphics editing than photoshop.

But apart from that i agree with the others corel, illustrator, photoshop etc.

If you can't draw and look at the screen at the same time, a tablet is not for you.

There are lot of other ways of getting your drawings on the computer besides using a tablet.
