Question Photoshop CS2 layers-link help

I just downloaded a trial of this, and after reading all of the instructions, etc. I still can't link layers. The link icon at the bottom displays a black circle with an X through it when I roll over it. It won't function at all. I am used to the link icons being next to each layer. This is really frustrating.

How do I unlock this link funtion????

Ahhhhhh!!!

Harley , are you trying to group them? It look like you are working on one level not different levels. If you had different levels the circle would go away and you could group them. I think that is what I am reading here. I just did a test to see and because I did have different level it then allowed me to group the levels and the circle with x was gone. Is this the question.. select your first layer, then shift-select the layer you want to link with, then click the link icon.

this is new in cs2, i had to figure it out also.

if this doesn't work, then maybe it has something to do with the trial version?

Lou,

I've got different layers making up a single image. I just want to link layers so that I can move them around the page as on piece. I've grouped them, and this lets me move them around together, but the link button is still locked.

I guess I don't even understand why there IS a link button, if one can simply group the seperate elements.

Ah hah! That works like a charm, thanks Kenn. I missed your first post before I responded to Lou. Thanks...I guess I really didn't understand the PS "help" instructions.
