Here's a tutorial I found covering a similar topic that came up on these forums for Illustrator, hope it's useful for 9:
Using Envelope Distort in Illustrator for Fitting Words in Shapes Corrie Haffly

Here's the thread discussing the "similar topic", although the user wanted the word Football to be angled in on top and bottom, but the envelope method will also allow you to do it from the bottom only if wanted.

Searching for a certain tutorial I saw!

I don't use Illustrator but in Photoshop CS3, I use the warp tool to get the same effect. Hope that helps.

I don't believe the good envelope tools had been introduced as of Illustrator 9. If that is the case, then maybe try using Corel Draw which has very powerful envelopes. Illustrator didn't have it's own envelopes until very late but I can't remember precisely when they were introduced. Prior to that, there were envelope plugins from Letraset that were extremely awful, but better than nothing.

thutch15,
Illustrator, type text, select text with black pointer, in menu go to effects>warp, arc lower -8 or so. Hope this helps.
