There is no standard. Use wht you think will look good. As far as a template just resize the page to your design dimensions. When your ready to print change to that of your film or paper.
somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 x 2 for a two-line phrase that you might see at a Hot Topic... if you have more lines, and the design is tall, you might be looking at 8 inches wide. You just need to eyeball a volume that looks good.
you can just print an actual size and cut it out and put it on the shirt and see how it looks.
10 inch width for text is generally pretty good, and about where we aim. A few designs don't need as much of an impact (or are shorter) as well, and those are smaller. Generally, just try to get a sense of how it will look on the shirt and be appealing and readable.
The size of design or width of text totally depends on the shirt to be printed . A womens tank wont hold the image an Xl tee can. A large is dwarfed by an 3xl.

Guess it depends on the size in the tank but that's a different forum. But overall, I get the idea. By the way, does anyone sell 8.5 by 14 or longer transfer paper. I didn't see any for Ironall. The printers width is standard 8.5. Not sure if I need more than 11 but you never know.
