Question What Method Do You Use To Get Your Design On You Computer?

Hi, I Go By The Name Of BluePhantom. I Recently Decided To Enter The World Of T-Shirts, And Was Just Wondering What Method Do You Guys Use To Get Your Graphics On The Computer? Do You Create You Design On The Computer? Or Do You Draw Them By Hand And Then Scan Them?

My Future Line Of Shirt Will Be Artistic, Therefore I Need To Find Out What Would Be The Best Way For Me To Get My Design Onto My Computer After I've Drawn Them?

Any Nfo Is Appreciated.

A little of "whatever works". I do most of my design work with mouse and graphics programs. But from time to time, I have to scan in a work I or a client has worked up. And then sometimes life plays nice and a client sends me a cut ready file with no set-up. Im learning Corel Graphics suite X3 but thats going slow so I use Cibercut for my straight forward stuff and I revert back to my PhotoImpact for the raster stuff.

certainly computers are best prefered by many designers ... using coral draw, adobe illustrator , adobe photoshop etc kind of softwares....but decades back hand traced images were mainly printed on garments ... and it still happens round the world ... ( i can specially say ... in my country ppl do make hand traced images) ...by sketching directly on translusent tracing paper and directly exposing it....also i see many designers using pen mouse instead of normal mouse to sketch directly on computers ....if you have knowledge of some basic softwares...you can create effective designs just using your creativity and applications... ...

Ahhh the good ole ruby lift and stat cameras. I actually have a large roll of rubylift on hand for fixing some old designs that we still print.

i use a scanner when i have to get something onto the computer but do most work on the computer. Soon I will have a tablet so I can draw on the tablet in Corel. I'm just not that good with the mouse.

Is it rubylift, or lith. I though lith which was short for litho since it is used in the printing and graphics industry. Just curious since it took me back to my twenties when I was a color separator in the pre press industry.

About That Pen Mouse. Is That Reliable? My Brother Wich Is My Artist Suggested That I Buy One, But I'm Not Sure If That's The Best Way To Go. How Well Does Pen Respond? Is It Like Those Pads Where You Sign When You Pay With A Credit Card? Cause I've Never Been Able To Sign My Name Without It Looking Like A Little Kid Signed. For Some Reason Extra Lines Always Appear.

No, it's not like the cheap things you use at Home Depot or the grocery store. I saw a demo and they're actually pretty cool. They come in different colors and sizes with a pretty good range(wireless). Other people on here use them so they can add more than I can. I had one on order but they were out of the one I wanted and it was going to be six weeks to get it. here is the site to look at them. www.wacom.com

A lot of people refer to it as rubylift (which is what I always heard/spoke it as), but it's rubylith (as attested to by the catalogue of my supplier). Rubylift is arguably kind of correct through useage though

Oh god yes. That brings me back... to last Wednesday. Hmmm.

(well, not pre-press colour separation, but the headaches (and neck aches!) from leaning over a light table for seven and a half hours without more than one or two five minute breaks).

Well put.

To put designs onto fabric in the last year, from the top of my head I've:
  • designed directly onto the computer with mouse
  • designed directly onto the computer with wacom tablet
  • taken a digital photograph and printed it to film from the computer
  • taken a non-digital photograph, scanned it, etc.
  • scanned hand drawn images into a graphics program
  • painted dye directly onto screen
  • painted onto copy paper and heat transferred to fabric
  • cut stencils and printed through those
  • cut rubylith and used that to expose a screen
  • painted an original design directly onto film, and exposed that to a screen
  • traced a design onto film by hand, and exposed to screen
  • hand drawn, then photocopied to film
You don't really realise how many ways of getting things done there are until you start listing them all.

From those using a Wacom, whats the quality like these days? I had one of the 6 x 9 tablets when they first came out and I wasnt impressed. And being as they ran roughly $125us I wasnt looking to dump cash into something that left a nasty feel the last time I used it.

I have been using Wacom tablets for around 9 years, I started out with an ArtZII and I have an Intuos model now. It's a few years old but it's still awesome. I love it.

I would say that they definitely have improved over the years (and I'm sure the newest ones are even better), but to appreciate them fully you also have to have a graphics program that really takes advantage of all of the features (pressure sensitivity, tilt, etc).

Also, for me at least, a bigger tablet is always easier to use - 9x12 or larger.

Hope that helps.
