I have Fontographer 4.1.5, it's rather old yet powerful. For Mac OSX, in March 06 they releases a decade long wait of an upgrade 4.7.3. Basically, Fontlab is the mother of all font creator/editors. There are some lesser known programs
on the market but im not familar with them. Fontographer runs retail around $300+ but im sure on ebay it can be had cheaper.
Fontographer is kinda easier to use than Fontlab, both have their complexities.
There will be a good learning curve of the program. Maybe grab Fontlab's user manual off the site for a glance of whats involved.
Fontlab 5.0 Studio Demo & Manuals page
On the otherhand runs about $650 off their site. Its a potent tool.
I cannot verify use of other font editor/creators because I have Fontographer
and use a co-workers Fontlab 4.6. Both work very well for my needs.
If you plan on creating fonts be prepared about kerning and pairs, it can be a long and tedious process to get your job done the way you might want it. it isnt easy as intended but it is pretty cool. I dont see why you couldn't use your new font on a commercial level as long as you dont rework an obvious
Adobe font and call it your own.
Hopefully there will be others to contribute to my short note.
