There are actually around 400 free fonts on Myfonts. You can just search for the word "free" to see them. But to answer your question, yes, people really do pay $30 for a font. You are going to use it hundreds of times in the future, and possibly make thousands of dollars selling products that feature it. When you look at it that way, $30 is not a lot of money.

That is correct. If it is free for personal use, you can't use it for any commercial purpose. When it comes to Shareware, you may be able to pay a small fee and then be able to use it commercially. Just check the license first to make sure.
If you download some of the "free for personal use" fonts, it's a good idea to keep a file with a record of all the fonts you download - The one I have specifies what site I got them from, who made them, and whether or not I can use them commercially. It's a lot easier to keep track of them that way, and you don't have to go read every license when you are ready to use one.
