Okay, I use an edition of flexi to do all of my artwork in. Most of the images I use are just clipart and they are already vectorized. I have an image though that is not and I need to vectorize, but not real sure how to do it. if anyone has any tips please let me know...thanks. jenny
I do all my graphical work in microsoft expression. . .partly cuz it's a good program but mostly cuz it's totally free!
Yup, it's still in the beta stage but I've run into very few corners where it won't do something. I just put the raster in one layer and draw the vector over it in another. Sometimes, like if it's simple or if the conversion is very geometric I'll do it on my laptop (with a mouse) but I have a tablet PC I use to draw on (pen).
does anybody know of a free auto-vector program that allows you to save the vector? My searches came up with a lot of free software, but none of them let me save the vector...

There isnt any out there. Some programs like CoreTrace and Illy can trace bitmaps to vector but rarely work the way youwill want them to or need them to.

I use Flexi for just about all design and production.
!. Convert bitmap to greyscale
2. Use the trace feature
3. Straighten lines and smooth curves with the tools provided to do so
4. Reduce points
If you want to shoot me a jepeg of what you are trying to do I will be able to give you more in depth tips.

I figured as much. this program's auto-vector function works great, but you've got to fork out $300 bones to save the files... ouch.
Actually, microsoft expression has an autotrace function. It produces some strange, unpredictable results sometimes, but it works. And since expression is free, and you can save the files, that should serve your purposes.
All you have to do is open the program, open a new vector file, import your image, select autotrace, and then play with the settings.

Autotrace or any trace feature won't solve problems at all if you are trying to vector art. The trace is just the first step...cleaning up the trace is the game.

Indeed. I'm still trying to decide which is faster - auto-tracing and then fixing everything, or just manually tracing the design. It's pretty close; probably depends on the design.

Jenny,
Are you able to do a Lens (Transparency) on graphics with Flexi? Can you lock
images also?
if you can do the above, place a transparent box over the image and lock them
both. Then manually draw your straight lines accordingly, then convert them to curves accordingly. This should help, only if Flimsy allows it. Works like a charm in Coreldraw. Or maybe even put your images on a different layer. I work in the sign industry and dislike Flimsy. Hehhe, as you can tell.
