can i post my contest here to get feedback? is it safe
hi
i am not a very good artist so i started a contest on another website to have people draw a logo for me. i will be planning on doing many other contests since i have many, many t-shirt designs thought out in my head, but cant draw them
anyway, im very pleased with some of the submissions people have sent it, but i would like some of YOUR feedback as well. is it safe to post it here or will it not be such a good idea
Re: can i post my contest here to get feedback? is it safe
You can post a post in the site and design review section, if you are looking for feedback on the designs. If you are looking to hire a graphic artist, you can post a post in the referrals and recommendations section. But there is not really an area to post a contest.
So if you are just looking to post to get feedback on what designs you already have, feel free to post it in the site review section

For what it's worth to designers reading this a contest is just a way to harvest free Ideas and take advantage of beginning artists. one may win but the others lose. This person acts like they are doing us a favor LOL

I am writing to on behalf of AIGA, the professional association for design. We are concerned about your recently publicized design contest [name or nature of contest].
Although we realize that such contests are a popular way for organizations to generate publicity and participation—and to save costs—there are a number of reasons why asking for work without compensation except for a single design that is selected, which is termed speculative work in the profession, contradicts the ethics of our profession.
The first is that design is a process. It involves time, creative energy, strategy and, most importantly, client participation. For a designer to generate work without going through this process is to create something that is undeveloped and that does not reflect the client’s input and participation. The resulting work is not truly representative of the value or level of service designers provide, nor does it adequately or appropriately address your needs as a client. Just as you wouldn't seek legal or financial advice from a consultant prior to hiring them, a designer must also be well acquainted with your organization and goals if they are to make informed and responsible recommendations.
The other reason is that expecting speculative or uncompensated work demonstrates a trivializing of the contribution design makes to creating value for clients. Of all the entrants in your contest or competition, only one will be selected as a finalist. The time and work of all others will have gone for naught. This attitude on the part of a prospective client is likely to result in receiving work from students, inexperienced or untrained designers, or those less likely to get work from more traditional ways of demonstrating the soundness of their approach toward clients’ problems. The pool of work from which you will select will not necessarily represent the quality of work you deserve from seeking a professional designer. In the end, everyone loses.
We encourage you to reconsider holding this contest, and instead issue a Request For Proposals from qualified design professionals. I know that selecting a designer can be a difficult and daunting task. To assist you, the AIGA provides resources to help you research firms in your area. This database is available online at AIGA Designer Directory: Networking: AIGA. We have also created a helpful guide that can assist you in researching qualified designers, writing a design brief, and managing the design process. This resource is also available free online at Design Business and Ethics: Design & Business: AIGA.
We are pleased that you recognize the need for design, and hope that you will consider these recommendations in the spirit in which they are offered—to help you realize the most that design has to offer. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly at [contact info].
Your consideration of these professional design issues is greatly appreciated.

I agree... these contests only benefit people who will take artists work and ideas and make it their own without compensating the artist... it's unfortunate that there are people with no morals or decency out there.... but there are...
Re: can i post my contest here to get feedback? is it safe
No contests are not the only way, paying for art is another. If you can't pay or create it get out of the kitchen, cooks are working here. "sorry we feel that way" what are you sorry we are trying to make a living? It not that you ask, it is that you think their is nothing wrong with it.
Re: can i post my contest here to get feedback? is it safe
Don't be too discouraged Peter, while some artists loath "contest" sites, the vast majority will still submit artwork to them. So if that is the direction you want to go, there is nothing wrong with it. If an artist feels it is beneath them, then they will choose not to participate.
The success of other contest type sites like threadless, 99 designs and design by humans proves that submitting work on spec can be very lucrative for artists. So you'll always get quality artists who will participate.

I don't loath contests I loath the people who prey on new artists. those sites you mention are lucrative for the site not the artist. If a artist wins they maybe get $500 a few shirts. Professional artists do not participate because concepts & ideas are what we sell. Is it beneath me to expect to get paid for work done? What other profession is it ok to give free work? Your right peter can do it but I have a right to call attention to scams. After 38 years doing this full time I have seen all kinds of scams, dress it anyway you want but contest are no way to succeed in the commercial arts. And if you made a living by illustrating you would agree.

@ Gratz
I'm opposed to the "contest" model, but it's true that you should not feel bad if you truly have not looked into this debate prior to this. You'll find mixed opinions on this board regarding the subject.
At this point, in my opinion, the responsible thing for you to do would be to educate yourself on the subject matter and then make an informed decision as to whether you would prefer to continue supporting the model or not.
For opinions against read through the links I posted for AIGA, and browse the no!Spec blog to start. There you will find numerous reasons why most credible professionals are opposed to such "contest" sites.
I'd also suggest searching the boards at forum.howdesign.com or even creating an account and asking yourself for some healthy feedback from leading industry professionals.

I really have to laugh. and with all do respect. I read the following on your messages
"Hello there.. I'm in a need for a favor, I know this kind of random but I'm looking for someone that can do 2 graphic designs for me and put them on tshirt template.. psd file 300 dpi.. Im about to come out with a clothing line i only have money to pay for the screenprinting not a graphic designer. If you willing to do that for me I will appreciate it.. I can give you 2 free tees. Plus i will like to work with you in the future.. But with money.. And Could tees be done by today or friday cause Im trying to get tshirts in production by saturday. please hit asap
This is what I am talking about, you will never make a living doing free work. The thought of going to a car dealer and saying I can't pay you for a car but I have money for gas, and they give you a loaner LOL . You are commenting like you are some professional and know what you are talking about.
its your right but between you and I its really bad advise

Starting new ventures sometimes you are just unaware of the roads you need to follow. People come here with good intentions as you may have. Other may see what you are doing is trying to rip off someone. Just rethink your idea. And actually it is not the only way you can get it done. Visit your local collage and ask the instructor for help in their art or design class. Students are always looking for ways to do their art and make a couple of extra bucks. Be good to give them credit as well. When I started a business years ago some one suggested I contact Stanford Business school for help doing my business plan.. Stanford University!!! Sure they will.. But they did assign a student to do one for me. He got credit for the work and I got a loan.. I learned a lot from that. Lou

or he just might not have the smarts to know the right road to travel. If you are a designer you might offer a way that he does the right thing. I am sure, or hope I am sure he wasn't trying to rip someone off. Lou
Re: can i post my contest here to get feedback? is it safe
I talk to artists all the time, they e-mail me I tutor some whatever, I hear what your saying but for someone to ask something for nothing is silly and in the art business if they get their nose out of joint because of what I say ? they are not meant for this business. I am all for young enterprise I am doing a job for a group of college kids now who approach me only had a small budget but they had a budget I worked with them. It is the expectation that our time is less valuable than theirs.
This is a discussion about can i post my contest here to get feedback? is it safe that was posted in the Graphics and Design Help section of the forums.
