Default Yet another vector question

Hello all,

Here is another vector art question from a vector art newbie.
I have a basic understanding of vector art… or as I call it the Wiki version.
I understand how vector art can be resized without losing resolution not like raster art.

Here is my question; especially for GIMP users but I don’t think it really matters. When creating vector art, can you use any tool available as long as you save it as a vector or can you only use the path tool to create vector art?

With GIMP; do you save it as an XCF file?

OK, that is all thank in advance!

I think has fairly limited vector abilities. The program does have the basics but you would be better off downloading Inkscape. This program is free just like Gimp. I think the format both use for vector is SVG but Inkscape has a few other options when using, importing or exporting files.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Project iirc) is a free raster based photo editing application. Basically what Linux geeks created and used as a Photoshop for Linux, but is now multi-platform. I haven't used it for quite a few years and wasn't really good with it when I did use it (would make buttons and graphics for websites, that's bout it).

As to the OP's original questions: Unsure how Vector works in GIMP, but if you have the option for Encapsulated PostScript 2, I believe it's the most commonly supported Vector+Raster format for plotters.

The XCF format is GIMP's multilayer format. It should be possible to save as XCF from inkscape, but don't count on it.
It is not working on my inkscape (on Windows XP) at the moment.

I think you must save your artwork layer by layer in GIMP, and then import it into Inkscape and trace it there.
If you have used vector in GIMP, it must be saved in eps or pdf format (or maybe some other vector format), if you want to open it with other software.

Gimp exports to svg... scalable vector graphic
also try inkscape like others have said... it's vector based and free... I tried it and it's really cool and pretty quick to learn....
