Default I've used PSP for years do I really need Photoshop like many say?

Like the subject heading says I've been using Paint Shop Pro (9) for years and can find my way around pretty well. Is there some advantage I don't know about in having Photoshop?
Will Paint Shop Pro do all I need?
Thanks,
Susie who is going to try the new heat press today.

Pretty much - unless you want to use PS macros. Try GIMP, free download, it should do everything a basic PS user wants.

Thanks Dave for the help. I really don't want to learn another program but my husband says he will get me photoshop if that is what is best.
Paint Shop Pro doesn't do vectors though right? If I get into using a cutter I would have to get Illustrator or Inkscape am I right?
Thanks again,
Susie

Inkscape plus GIMP should handle vectors and raster images.

I'm all for open source alternatives, I've seen some amazing work done using inkscape and gimp.

As for the photoshop question, or whether or not you should switch, I think it really depends on what you expect out of your software and what your goals are. If you are just looking to do basic stuff there is no need to change probably. But if you are looking to get really deep into something, well, Photoshop is a very very deep program, and capable of some amazing things. The same goes for illustrator.

I say if your husband is willing to buy it for you than why not. And if you do go the photoshop route I'd suggest signing up for a subscription to Lynda.com and working through some of the tutorial videos there, it will make a nice compliment to your new software and should help to get you going pretty quickly.

Thanks Dave AND Jimmy. I'll consider the options you've told me about.
Appreciate it,

If you are happy with paint shop pro (isn't that now a product from Corel?) I see no reason to get Photoshop for this biz. If you are considering a vinyl cutter, I would suggest just adding Corel Draw and you should be all set.

If you buy Coreldraw it comes with Photo-Paint and it has grown into a powerful program. I have used Adobe Ill and photoshop for years but Corel has caught up
if not surpassed and you really should start using a little more vector art especially if you evr get a cutter.

Thanks Charles and Todd.
I think I will use Paint Shop Pro and then in a bit (after the holidays) see about Photoshop/Illustrator. I don't know if I'm going to get into the cutter thing or not. This 'is' just a hobby but I bet a lot of you start out saying that.
Appreciate the feedback,
Susie

I have been accused of turning my hobbies into businesses.
But 20 years later I'm glad that I did

You should get flexi-sign from a company called scanvec-amiable. It comes with cutter & printer drivers. Just design and cut, no muss, no fuss.
