I am no expert with AI...as I tend to use Corel more but I think you need another program to convert AI to dst

5 years or so I did some digitizing for Embro. don't think I ever had some one use "AI" though. Have the person print it out on paper and scan it back the res is not that needed.

I would suggest you post this in the embroidery section and also if you do a search for 'dst' here you might find more info. Also google for an embroidery forum. All I am really sure about is that you will need a program to convert. I think most embroiderers charge around $35 or so just to convert a file. If are are near a larger city, I would check for a brother dealer. They have a couple of different machines and could probably help you out.

You can go to What is a quick and easy program to read .dst files? and read the thread...there is a link to a free program to convert files to dst..I would suggest reading the posts in the section on embroidery on the forum

Pulse embroidery software makes a plugin for Illustrator
They say its pretty cool but since I also us Corel I know nothing about it only that its out there
I'm sure you can find it doing a search
I am also sure that the $ will probably scare you but if that is the field your are getting into it may be a BIG help
Other than that may of the newer embroidery digitizing softwares will import an eps file, as a base to begin the digitizing process.

I save my illustrator file as an .EPS file then import it into my embroidery program where I can auto digitize it. I use Melco DesignShop Pro Plus.
