Good tutorial. The problem is when you have complex gradients and color blends. Selecting the colors properly and making the channels stack up for an accurate on screen preview is a whole different animal.
Separating spot colors is exceptionally easy, gradients on a black shirt- now that's separation. I would use the select color range option instead of the magic wand, but your technique is spot on.
Try separating the image posted. This is where fast films, and easy art, and quick seps really show their value. This can be done manually, but it takes a lot of time, and an extreme learning curve.

I totally agree with you, i should of mention for simple spot color seps, and i see where fast films comes into play on this one. But for being a newbie in screen printing i felt that this tutorial was extremly helpful for basic designs.
