Default trying to turn hand drawings into vector images HELP!

i am completely new at this and not very good with computers, so bear with me!
i have some very clear good hand drawings and i have scanned them into my computer. i want to be able to turn these into vector images and i think i have figured it out through the "live trace" tool. what i am not certain of is all the stuff about various layers in illustrator...
do the layers need to be linked? and in regards to size...how can i see in illustrator what the actual size is measurement-wise...and is it typical for the designer to have to resize each image as the t-shirts get bigger?

anything i should know (and remember i know like...nothing) would be SO helpful.

thanks!

make sure you expand and ungroup so you can delete the white background that the live trace function leaves. For size in illustrator just make sure you set a document size and tranform your image to that perspective so the printer knows what size to print your doc. about the layers I would say that depends on the image and amount of colors.... if its just a grey scale sketch then I would leave it all on one layer... if you have different colors I would seperate onto different layers so the printer can do their magic a little easier.

Great info.
Can you tell me more on how to expand and ungroup to get rid of the background?
