Is there a specific font or a plug in for photoshop to make text look like this? Not sure as to what its called but it appears to look like vintage/distressed/broken text.

Reason: made pic thumbnail
You should experiment with Filter - Render - Clouds/Difference Clouds and Noise, Blur, Smart Blur, Curves Levels, Threshold, Masks, also use pictures of textures like dried up clay. Exercise thru all the menues and learn it "all".
Exercise thru blending modes, masks, layer channels. Simply :-) learn everything in Photoshop.
I would use PhotoShop myself. Between the brush styles alone with the eraser tool you should be able to create distressed fonts even better than those ones.

Yeah there is actually numerous ways to create that effect on your text. Some I've learned from tutorials and some I've learned from just messing around. To me once you learn and understand a few major effects...everything else is just cake walk. You'll just start experimenting and applying methods you learned to do one thing to another and mix other methods up.
But all you have to do is search for TEXT TUTORIALS or search for Grunge Text Tutorials I guess thats the typical name for that type of Text Look.
Also you can find fonts that already look like that, then type up what you want, then spice it up more by editing it and applying effects you've learned.
Here is a good one too for creating your own distressed mask. Real easy and only takes a couple of minutes to produce. Check it out!!!!
This guy has a ton of cool tutorials on his site too. www.tutvid.com

Exactly.
There are many ways to do it such a using different brushes with the eraser tool as mentioned above. Just mess around with it maybe you'll come up with results that you'll like more than what you see on that shirt.
Thx guys really appreciate all the input, actually I found a nice font that actually meets the idea I am looking at. It is called nihilschiz "faith-collapsing" font.
This shirt is amazing. MY son would flip for this for Christmas. Is there a place that it can be purchased? As far as your question is concerned. It seems that you have that resolved. All were excellent answers!
