Default psd help: opening a PSD in coreldraw x3?

ok I have had a logo designed and it has been sent to me in a psd format, I am using CorelDraw x3 to open the file but it does not look like the jpg file of the logo. this is what the designer. Hi, if you open the PSD with Corel Draw it may not read it correctly. If you have Photoshop open it with that. I can assure you the PSD is the same image as the JPG.
I wanted the file in vector format is psd vector? can it be opened in corel or will it have to be opened in Photoshop, which I don't have.

cheers lorin

PSD is not vector.

Since PSD is Adobe's own Photoshop format it's very possible that it's a proprietary format and can't be opened by other programs (though I don't know for sure).

a PSD is rasterized/pixelated. the information is different than that found in the major vector formats, which yield scalability-- SVG, EPS, PDF, AI and CDR (Corel's vector format). There's also CGM, EMF, HGL, OGR and Flash files that are vector-based, but those first few are your best bets.

oh yeah, i believe you can open/import it into CD, but the image will be bitmapped.

Some programs can open PSD files, and seem to be doing it without paying for the privlidge, so I don't think the format is entirely protected.

If you can't open the file at all in CD (or it looks way off), you might try to open it with a free image viewer like Irfanview. From this program (and others like it), you can save as another format if you need to (such as tiff, png, etc.).

try to "import" the PSD into corel draw instead of "opening" it and see if that helps any.

gentle reminder:

if you wanted it in a vector format, yet the image was saved/sent PSD, it cannot be openned as a vector image. PSD converts it into bitmap/rasters even if the image was originally created with vectors. so whether or not CorelDraw can open it does not matter, if it is vectors you need.

a fix for this is: if you or someone you know has Adobe Illustrator CS2, they can "Auto-trace" the image into vectors, save it in a vector format (AI, EPS, CDR, SVG, PDF) whereby you can then open in CorelDraw with vectors... or ask the person to send it in such formats.

I've been using the free trial version of Corel for the last week. Rodney's right. You can import the psd file and it will open for you.

It will be a raster image.

If you want to make it a vector, you have to go up to "bitmaps", then "trace bitmap".

Then you get different options as to how to trace. Once the trace is complete (it can take a while depending upon how detailed your image is), you then have a vector.
