I need to create a bunch of graphis for print. Was looking to hire someone, but "WOW", they want a ton of money for each design. I was thinking about going down to a local school that deals in media and hire students.
What I want to know is, how do you go about creating graphics for screen printing? I myself can create graphics in Illustrator and Photoshop, but is there anything special I have to do? I know what color seperation is, but I do not know how to do it.
Most of the designs that I want, I can't do myself. I can draw objects that are inatimate or not living pretty well, but that is about it. Not all that creative when it comes to the designs that I need to create.
Sorry I don't have any advice for you. But I'm wondering what type of money when you say 'a LOT!' I'm in the process starting up and looking for a designer as well. So I'm pretty curious.
Hi. A good designer can make the difference between your products flying off the shelves, or still sitting on the shelves months later. The rates they charge will be based on their own skill matrix and the complexity of the designs.
A top flight designer can typically command fees in excess of $1,000 a day but can generate millions for the businesses that use them.
Media students can certainly help out for those on a tight budget, but they'll still want a reasonable reward for their efforts.
The designs required for screen printing probably have a limit in terms of number of colours they can print but I dont think there is any other criteria. It is more a matter of making catchy designs that will make people look!

If you're hiring media students from local schools, I'd be very, very wary about it. Not many designers, let alone high school students will set up the designs properly. I've had tons of clients who supply their own "art" that is completely unusable. You know, a full back peice that's 3 inches wide @ 72 dpi or stuff pulled from the internet. In my opinion, it's worth hiring someone that understands not only good design, but how silkscreening works. That way you only have to pay for the design once, instead of paying a 2nd person to fix or re-create the design.

it looks like you already have what is needed in screen printing. i think all you need is to get your feet wet. start with any design of your own ... go simple, 1 or 2 colors. doesn't matter if it's your best artwork or not. just finish the whole process (from designing to printed t-shirt).... after that look at your finish product and from there you do your adjustments.... the point is, just to get your feet wet.
sometimes, if an artwork doesn't look good in the computer... it does look good on a t-shirt when it's printed.

You know, maybe you just need someone to do some sketches for you and then you can go over them and outline/color/whatever them yourself. If you can already use Photoshop and Illustrator it shouldn't be hard for you. If I were you, I'd be more comfortable hiring design students to do sketches that full-blown designs (just in case).
