So I thought that you might be able to use some kind of distress to lay over the top of my text to get the look I want. Does anyone have any suggestions?

But any overlay will also work. Here is a tutorial on making your own U.S. Screen Print & Inkjet Technology \| Random Distressed Look Free overlays from coreldraw.com Distressed Filter / overlay - CorelDRAW.com If that's not enough, do a google search. Tons more.

Have you looked at 10000 fonts, the have different distressed fonts. Look under catagory.
