Unhappy College GD Student needs basics for screen printing

I am a graphic design college student and i have received a job doing the tshirt designs for a local shop mainly for sports teams. This is exactly what i would like to get into so i'm excited. However I didn't realize that screen printing is completely different then on paper. I don't have a problem coming up with the design, it's making it screen printable. I know to use the color palette for pantones from version 8. What i'm having a problem with is the halftone dots. They can all be the same frequency and angle if i'm planning on it being a solid color right? But what if it's a gradient/fade? How do i know what to do with the dots?

If you could help me out with just the basics so i can get my designs ready for the printer that would be great.

Thanks. Any help will be great.

alot depends on the capapbilities of your screenprinter are. i'm not exactly sure about the technical end of things are for how the printer chooses to set-up your job but i know with gradients (which are made up of fine dots, which you know) they need to go with a specific screen i.e. fine mesh compared to a large mesh so that the dots print as designed. but all this is really handled by your printer.

what you need to know from him is how he wants to receive your finished design. if it's more than one color it will have to be color separated. you'll then have to send him the file (most of the time he'll ask for an .eps file) by uploading it on the internet, hand delivering it etc. i've always thought that's it's much better to find a shop that's nearby so you can go in and see their work, discuss your designs, pricing etc. and if you do find a shop like this ask to be there when the first shirt comes off the dryer so he's not printing hundreds of shirts that aren't up to snuff (usually by that time i'm sure he'll have given you a hard copy run off). sorry i'm just blabbing now.

but anyway if you need help this is the place to ask. i'm curious as to know what program/s will you be using to complete your designs? remember that creating a design thats printed to paper is basically the same as setting up a design for textile printing, it's just how they are printed that's different.
