I Have Adobe Illustrator CS, Need to open file from newer version Illustrator
Is there a way to open up newer Adobe versions of adobe Illustrator files without buying the newer version. I am totally happy with using Illustrator CS but occasionally get a file I cannot open due to being created in a later version. I Know I can ask the person who sent the file to save it as an earlier version but I would rather have the ability to do it without getting anyone else invovled. Is this possible?
Re: I Have Adobe Illustrator CS, Need to open file from newer version Illustrator
It is my understanding that the newer Illustrator is not backward compatible. It can open older CS files, but the older CS can't open the new files...I wonder if other programs...ie corel, xara etc could open it...
Re: I Have Adobe Illustrator CS, Need to open file from newer version Illustrator
My Corel is an older version as well but I will try it. It's just that I spent a small fortune on these programs years ago and they do everything I need except open newer files. This sublimation company is a side business and I cannot afford to keep upgrading. I just switched over to Adobe Elements for Photoshop and Premier and am quite happy with their capabilities, Is there a Illustrator Elements that I don't know of?

If you had access to a newer version, you can specify how to resave the file so older versions can utilize the file. Other than that, you are out of luck. Maybe there might be a third party file converter program out there somewhere, but I've never looked into it. There is always the pirate route, but I know that is not the best option for a for profit company.

Brian, Thanks for the offer. I just sent the file to your pixel perfect.com e-mail. Just wondering, you state no job too small but you don't mention sublimation. You dont actually silkscreen the small orders do you?

Let's see. If the design does not need to be separated in Illustrator just open it in photoshop. It will flatten the file offcourse. If it's just a one color job then just open it in photoshop. Another way is too convert the file to pdf. I believe the Adobe website has a service to convert files to pdf. I'm not sure if this applies to graphic files. Illustrator can open a vector art in a pdf document. Just hope the customer outlined their fonts just in case you don't have them. If it is an .eps that was saved in a later version of illustrator you can open it in coreldraw. Just hope there is no conflict with gradients created in illustrator. So far there is no way to open a .ai file from a later version of Illustrator.

I'm not sure if this will work for you but I did it once. Open the illustrator file in Adobe Acrobat. Save if as a PDF then reopen it in illustrator. This will still keep your file vector.

I have an old version too. Just recently paid for some artwork done and I can't open it. I asked her to save it down for me (my version) and she said she didn't know how to do it. Can someone give me the directions so I can get her to resave it for me?
