I bought 2 copies from ebay. One in an auction and another via an online store with ebay. They were both about $100. One of the vendors took a long time to send it so I got my money back from the credit card company and they eventually shipped the product and never reinstated the charge.

Both were full copies with Corel CD's and keys. No books or anything else. These were probably copies that came with other products, aka oem software. I got X3 with our embroidery machine and I suppose the source of this software was similar. We sold one of our copies at that point so the software ended up being free between the sale, refund and purchase.

The slow vendor was called oem software shack.

Do you have a registered licence documentation in your name with corel. If it is real software you will have a licence that was registered in your name. Call Corel with the serial number and have them check their Licence records if it is real copy they will tell you who it is licenced to at that point you have to have the legal licence holder transfer their licence to you through corel If you actually read your software licence you would see that this is quite the process. I could sell you every disk, box, serial number I have but if I don't transfer the licence rights and remove all files from my system it is still my software, and if you get caught using it you are the one in trouble. Some where on your system you should have a file with all your software licences so that if you ever make it big, get a large corporate production contract, or have you work published you will be asked to prove that your system is 100% legal.

One place I did some work a few years ago refused to pay an employee the overtime they had worked. He reported the business to Microsoft as they had more people using the corporate license for Windows, than was stated. They were fined a total of £27,000 ($56,000).

Several firms I know, do regular computer audits, to ensure they stay the right side of the law.

Original Equipment Manufacturer. It means the equipment came bundled with the software and the equipment vendor paid a small price for it. They are not supposed to be resold but it happens. You generally will not get support from the software vendor for this software, only the hardware vendor that sold the equipment in the first place.

Plus OEM software usually has a non transferable non commercial licences. This means it is only usable on the machine it was sold on and only for private use. If you plan on using any software for any commercial purpose including you operating system you need to obtain the correct licence rights from the company. I know they are extremely boring but I can not express enough how Important it is to read all the terms and use of service, and review the licence text doc that is bundled with the software. If it is not there it is not a legal commercial software. Thats why there are cheap for home use versions and pricey pro use versions.
Like I said Earlier this even includes the standard windows OS bundled with your factory system. So you either need to purchase pro use software, or if you can not afford it, look to the open source community for free use software.

I registerd ( sp ?) with Corel and also got their "free" additional document templates. I assume it's legit, my X3 that is.

I recently purchased X4 from Amazon, the EDU version, for $89 bucks, I was still a student in the vo-tech school at the time, so I didn't do anything unethical or nothing. My point being is that you are supposed to show some proof of being a student to get the edu version, which by the way "does" have the VBA, amazon only wanted proof of a valid bank card. As far as not having manuals, you can purchase a lot better manual from an outside source than what comes with program, if the manual that came with my version 12 is any indicator, it's about useless as you know what.
I would be leary of buying software from any major company off E-bay, it used to be when they listed it as new from the manufacturer it meant something, but not anymore.

I use Coreldraw X3 and Illustrator CS2 all the time. They are both decent programs, but way overpriced for what they do.

I have often found that lower priced software actually outperforms some of the brand names. Think we all become conditioned to thinking we need this piece of software, or that piece of kit.

Until software companies put a more realistic price on their products, software piracy is always going to be a major problem for them. I just don't think that individuals should be penalised though, if they have bought something in good faith, believing it to be the genuine item.

EDU versions are also not legal to use for commercial work. Only education... Read you licence terms, it is the most important part of your work. If you can't prove how the work was done then you can't sell it! Any body using any software not licenced to them or their company is Breaking The Law!!! You are all worried about how to copyright and trademark your designs ,but yet you are not worried about your work being legally yours. When you start an adobe product on the start up screen it will Say What kind of licence, Serial #, and Who and What company it is licenced to. If it does not say pro version, your name and or organization, it is not a commercial version and can only be used for private non commercial use, or licenced non profit.

Their are companies that will finance software for legit businesses their is no need to steel, Or you could save yourself a fortune in years of recurring update fees and go open source.

I am mainly interested in Corel X3 because of the fact that my local community college offers a course on it, and I am not good at learning by just jumping in. If I sat down and tried to learn inkscape.org, I'd be here all year. I tried for a week, but not knowing where to go, I wandered around lost.

I have to buy a version of something that I can take a class on, and I don't want the educational version, because I'd like to be able to sell my designs, which I can't which the educational version.

Thanks all for all this helpful info. I'm sure alot of other folks will benefit from this discussion as well.

I was just hoping to find out if someone familiar with the REAL version, the Full Version, ever bought and received the REAL DEAL from an Ebay seller, and if they did, do the remember the supplier.

Still hoping to get a an answer on that if there is one, and thank you all again.

Yes Daniel, you are absolutly correct, the edu. version is not for commercial applications of any kind. In the real world, what are you gonna have, Corel cops checking everything you make to see if it was created with an edu. version. I also have a full version 12, if I make something in X4, send it to v12, cut or print, and sell, am I in violation??? The main point to my post, was to let some folks know there is an alternative to buying bootleg software off E-bay, even the OEM versions, have a notice on them, only to be sold with a new PC purchase, and then there's a lot of stuff lacking on the OEM version. So what we have here is a massive "GRAY" area, do you think Corel, MicroSoft, Adobe etc. etc., would rather you buy their edu. versions, which they will get their fair share of profits from, or purchase a bootleg version from E-bay, which they get nothing from . One other point, I don't appreciate your implication of me stealing anything, even if you can't spell "steal", and somewhere on your computer, I bet your running some software that may be legit, or not, and you not even know it, or you may. I am hoping to keep this thread on topic. I think everyone has stated their opinions clearly, at least I understand the point each of you is making. Do you fellows think it would be possible to continue this discussion in PM's? If not, is it possible to start a "new thread" on the topic of Educational, OEM, bootleg and Full Versions of software? Thank you, fellas. I am also hoping someone won't feel afraid to post in the thread about an Ebay seller for me, in case they worry about stirring up a bee's nest. Any help staying on topic of an Ebay seller with real versions of X3 would be appreciated. Thank you!

Okay, thanks everyone who responded - I really appreciate it. I bought a CD set off Ebay. I asked if it was the full version or OEM, as I would like to be able to upgrade and get updates, and he said FV, fully upgradable in the future. I won it at $60.99 ~fingers crossed~ so, hopefully all goes well, and I will update the thread after I receive and install it - in case anyone else is interested in what happens, or wants to follow the same route. Wish me luck!!
