HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
Hello, I am an aspiring graphic artist that wants input my sketches into software. I want to heat press them onto t-shirts and use a vinyl cutter to cut. I just don't know where to start. Do I start design in photoshop and then use illustrator to cut? Do I put text in the photoshop file or wait to add in illustrator? Or do I just do away with photoshop and design in illustrator only? I know illustrator must be used because I want to contour cut. I am really eager to begin... PLEAZ, SOMEONE HELP ME!!
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
it depends on what kind of finished artwork you are looking to output. if u want photorealistic with alot of gradients and airbrushing start first in photoshop. if your designs are more clean/hard line like most logos etc. do it all in illustrator. i believe you have to end up with a vector file to cut on a plotter anyway.
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
Piggybacking onto this topic -- I got the Corel Suite and Photoshop because they were recommended (I kept reading and hearing that I HAD to have Photoshop), and I wouldn't last a day without Corel Draw. But I have not yet come with any reason to use Photoshop. Can someone explain to me why I should be using it, and for what? I screen print and sublimate, and even for sublimation, I have had no problem manipulating photos satisfactorily in Corel Photo Paint. The few times I've brought up Photoshop, I get hopelessly confused and retreat back to the comfort of Corel.
What am I missing by leaving this icon undisturbed on my desktop?

Photoshop has tons of advanced options you can use, but to really take advantage of it you need to take a class on it. Stick with what you know, otherwise what is the point?
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
i've been talking about it for a while and finally took the plunge. i originally started with the photoshop for dummies book but recently got Adobe Illustrator Classroom in a book (just started with lesson 1 last night) and it's been really great so far. Awesome learning tool and after looking thru both books, i'm going with the illustrator route for my type of logo designs.
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
thanks guys, so if im reading correctly photoshop is for more photorealistic finishes and illustrator is for more "illustrating"? Would it be best if I drew in illustrator and colored in photoshop? Which is better for coloring art work?

Hi,
I just wanted you to know you could do the same or even more in coreldraw instead of learning a new program. Why I say that is illustrator and coreldraw use the same functions to create designs, but coreldraw has a trace(under bitmap) to create a quick and easy way of going about tracing the designs. It all depends on what you know and what programs are easiest to you. Also using the g radiant tool will help you get shades and highlights in both of the programs.
hear is a design i created under photo shop and i am going to transfer it to coreldraw for the text.
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
as mentioned, it depends on the type of art you will be creating. if you want more painterly or photographic images then photoshop is the way, but if you want to do quiet a bit of lettering, graphic type of work (thick clean lines with flat colors) then illustrator is the better choice.
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
I use both Photoshop and Illustrator. When working with photographs and retouching them I could only ever do that in Photoshop. However if I were to design a graphic from scratch I would use Illustrator. The main advantage of Illustrator is due to the fact that it creates vector images. This will allow you to resize your graphic made from scratch to any size without loss of quality. However if you import any image into Illustrator and try to resize you will lose image quality. Another advantage of Illustrator is that it handles text much better than Photoshop.
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
I use both frequently.Photoshop can give your drawings a more organic look. The bruh settings are wonderful and the fact that they can be applied to the pen tool makes it even more powerful.Do a search for tutorials in both programs and go with what makes you comfortable. The digital age has blurred the line. You don't have to choose one or the other...you can choose them all. There are many resources online. The thing that will help you most though is practice. There isn't an "easy"...just put your head down and plow...you'll look up after a little bit and be amazed at what you know.
Re: HELP PLEAZ!! Illustrator or Photoshop?? Which to begin with
Both. Without getting into adobe vs. corel debate, that is, because I'm not familiar with the newer corel products.
You mentioned that you want to print transfer sheets and trim them on your vinyl cutter. You can do this all from Photoshop, but illustrator is much more suited to creating vector paths for the vinyl cutter. Photoshop is much more suited for editing photographic style images like you might use in your printed transfers.
If you haven't been using either one, you really might want to look into corel, too, since you have to learn everything you need anyway.
