Need help with accurate shirt template in Photoshop CS3!!
Hey everyone. I took measurements of a AAA large adult short sleeve t-shirt. Then I took a centered bird's eye view picture of the shirt on the floor and imported it into Illustrator and traced the outline. Next, I imported that outline of the shirt into Photoshop (because my experience with Illustrator is very limited) and with the ruler guide active, I constructed the shirt template according to the exact measurements I took of the shirt. My problem is, when I magnify the template to 100% in Photoshop on my big screen LCD TV and hold the actual shirt up to the template, the template is waaaaay bigger than the actual shirt! I need the template in Photoshop to be the same exact size as the actual shirt so I have an accurate gauge to go by as I design oversized and all-over-print shirts! Can someone please tell me how I can achieve this in Photoshop since that's the program I do all my designing on? Thanks.

you are going to have to mess around with the resolution... if you set the image size to 10 x 10 with a resolution of something like 300, the 100% view will be much larger than an actual 10inches x 10inches. This will PRINT at 10 x 10 inches but with higher resolution, you have more detail on the screen.. i'd give you numbers to try if i had photoshop in front of me, good luck.

yea when you're working on figuring this out don't get confused buy the the print size versus resolution or size on screen. Set your document up to print the size you want then roll with it. It will come out the right size.
Re: Need help with accurate shirt template in Photoshop CS3!!
There are so many variables that go into this, that is is hard to get anything on your screen to be the exact size it is in real life. For the most part, you just have to get used to working with fiels an visualizing in you head how it will be. The most important factor is going to be working with the file the size it is going to be in the end, with a good resolution.

Re: Need help with accurate shirt template in Photoshop CS3!!
Thanks guys. I'm trying to understand screen resolution versus actual print size. I know that when I magnify the file to 100% in Photoshop, that it becomes way bigger on screen than it will actually look on the shirt. My next question is, how can I set the document at the actual print size (when I open a new document) if this is going to be an all over or oversize print shirt and not just 10" x 10" or 13.5" x 17.5" or 12" x 20", etc.? In other words, if the design isn't going to be in a rectangular print area, but rather, all over the entire shirt, how do I design a template that will be accurate for the actual print size for an all over print shirt? So, is my template correct since the measurements on the Photoshop ruler match the measurements I took of the actual shirt, even though at 100% magnification, the shirt template looks way bigger on screen than the actual shirt?!

An inch is an inch. When it comes to size, especially with an all over, it would be best to talk to a screen printe who does that kind of work and ask them. They may even have a template. When I work on my designs, I usually go high res (300 dpi), as sometimes I use it for other stuff. But I know the resolution doesn't have to be that high. I forget what it is though. But I have read it on the forums here.

So basically what your saying is if the the resolution is set to 100 or 200 or 300 the image on the screen will be bigger and in much more detail but when its printed out it will still be your origonal size in dimentions?
So if you want a 10 x 10 regardless of how big your resolution is set in the program the printout will still be 10 x 10?
Re: Need help with accurate shirt template in Photoshop CS3!!
try ctrl+T, it can change the size of your picture layer. Do press the shift button if you want it to be the exact proportion in heighth and width with the original one.
Re: Need help with accurate shirt template in Photoshop CS3!!
I say we have to work on the same resolution.. Lets say you have a 18x22in design on 300dpi then transfer on a 300dpi actual tee. It will work nicely but the view on scree for actual is not at 100%.. Lower about 25-50%.
Re: Need help with accurate shirt template in Photoshop CS3!!
A 10"x10" document in photoshop will print out as a 10"x10" document in real life - it's the canvas size that determines the actual print size. The resolution only tells you how many pixels per inch are within that document. Don't let yourself get confused with monitor resolution - that will always screw with how the image appears on screen. The important measurement to keep correct is the document size, and the resolution at which you want to create that document. Monitor size and on-screen image size will vary.
