Default resizing a photo to fit substrate

My buddy sent me some photos to put on some tiles for him. Nice photos however they are 35"x27". !
The tiles we were gonna put them on are 4"x4".
When I try to resize them down to fit the other side is too small.
I get the width at 4.25 the height is 3.21
vice versa height at 4.25 the width is 6.3
If I try to manually resize it then the pic looks pushed together.

Any secrets or is this just the way it is sometimes. ?

Thanks
Mark

if you want to keep it proportional you can do one of 2 things to make it look good.
1. crop some of the width out of it i.e. crop out 4" on either side. 27 X 27 then scale it down to 4x4
2. put a background behind it to make the height match width. 35 x 35
thank makes it look a lot better than just a white tile background. hope it helps, Devil Dog.

with any rectangle...you cannot make it square without doing something like Aaron suggested.. you can always 'squeeze' the photo but that will probably show the distortion.,

Yea thats what I am seeing when I resize (squishing).
Will try to crop it down first.

Also when I click on resize it says the dpi is 72. does changing that to say 200 or even 150 dpi make a difference in its appearance and if so for the better or worse. I can't really tell.

Thanks
Mark

72 dpi wil usually show some pixel distortion. i would go with the 200 dpi. what graphics program are you using?

I try to never use any photo under 300dpi...but you can do some work with lower resolution as long as you dont have to drastically resize

here is what I do if i can't crop the photo to fit. I build up the side of the photo that needs the extra on it.
I select a rectangular portion of the photo right next to the side that is lacking and copy it, then add it to the edge of the photo where it's needed or sometimes I just clone in the portion that is needed to make it square.
