Default how can I get my images smooth?

I downloaded 4 graphics with permission of the site owner and have spent the past month or more working up designs using the images. Problem is that when I make them 100% size, the look pixilated. Is there a way to make them smooth?
I use Paint Shop Pro v.9. I've already done well over a hundred designs and am not looking forward to re-doing them again. Is there a way to smooth them out at all? Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

You need to make them vector images.

Making them vectors will allow you to resize without losing image quality.
Paint shop pro is a raster-based program.

You can use software yourself such as vector magic, or use a service such as the vector doctor.

I've never used vector magic, but I've used the vector doctor several times, and was always pleased with his work.

Greg....don't know if you caught my earlier post...Vector Magic is no longer free...it has moved to it's own site...vectormagic.com and is not a pay site

Hi and thank you for taking time to reply. I've used Vector Magic and the results didn't impress me very much. Haven't tried vector doctor yet though. I also downloaded several programs which claimed the ability to make raster images vector. Not good atl all!

On the other hand, maybe the image (being a background) wouldn't look all that bad after being printed on a t-shirt. (I hope lol)

I'm definately not an artist - I do rather well with just text designs but can't draw a straight line with a ruler, as the saying goes. Maybe I'd better just stick to text designs. Thank you for your help.

You sound like a candidate for the vector doctor, then.

Check out his site. His prices, turn-around time, service, and work are all excellent.

A few questions here:

- Does this design have flat colors, which lend itself better to vector, or is it more of a photo type image?

- What resolution are you working at?

- Does it print pixelated? Sometimes an image may view pixelated but print fine.

It's just a clip art image. If I'm understanding you correctly then it has flat colors.

- What resolution are you working at?

200 dpi. Image is 10 inches by 10 inches.

I haven't printed it yet. However, I did upload it to CP and added it to a number of their products and it looked fine so I'm guessing it'll print on shirts ok.
The original image was enlarged a bit, opacity lowered by 60%, added a mask and then added the text at 100% opacity.

I believe I'm going to sign up with Printfection and upload all the designs there.
If you'd like to see what the images look like, I can add a link here. Or can I? Seems that I read somewhere that links are a no-no in the forum but on the other hand, I do see lots of links in the postings.

Thank you for taking time to reply to my query.

i've used vectoreye3 with some good results, basically i get the photo or whatever ready in photoshop by taking out the background stuff of what i don't need and I can usually get what i want with that program if not, i'll edit it in illustrator till it looks like what i want.

I've had really good luck with the Trace Bitmap tool in Inkscape. Enough that I prefer it over CorelTRACE.

using inkscape...is it possible to trace bitmaps and keep layers separate so that you can print each layer separate?

how do you do this?

thx

Each color/tone comes out as a separate object, if that's what you mean.

i'm refering to if you want to convert a psd file to a vector in inkscape and then be able to separate the colors to print as separate layers so you can make transparencies.

i aplogize...i'm inept with these programs and recently just discovered inkscape.

thx
