I wanted to know how they get those whips under the words to make the design look a lot better. Do they create them by hand or are they some sort of template? Thanks

most likely this was hand-drawn, scanned and then traced in illustrator. takes time and patience.

you can create those easily with the bezier tool. Changing the look of a font is easy enough to do, convert the text to curves then edit the nodes.

I'd agree that that design was done completely from scratch, not using a font as a base, either as a hand-drawn design, scanned and cleaned up in the computer, or just done in an illustration program.

Having a Wacom tablet would make this type of work fairly simple for someone proficient with this type of designing (I have HORRIBLE handwriting. That's why I need a computer for design. ).
