Can anyone help me. I need to find out how to layer vector art so that the bottom image is not visible through the top layer. I tried all night last night and I couldn't figure it out... Please... any suggestions will help... Thao1mage <<< Stressed out... HELP!!!! Oh, I am using Illustrator CS2 by the way... pain in the behind....
dead bunny, I made an error writing my message and I have edited the message... What I meant was to make the top image visible over the bottom later. Right now, I have trouble with my designs because the bottom image is visible through the top image making my design very funny looking. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, i am using illustrator and not photoshop. Would I have to do all this in photoshop, export it to Illustrator and then vectorize in Illustrator????
Hmmm... I don't really think I get what you are saying. If you are using Illustrator - You shouldn't have to bring it into Photoshop to do it - Illustrator has just about the same capabilities as Photoshop. Do you want to send me the file? Maybe I can see what you are talking about? Are we allowed to do that? My email is
I have two vectorized art images... I am trying to layer them on top of each other. For some reason, the bottom image is showing through the top one, making it look like its one image. Is this because of the negative space? Would I have to color the top image so the bottom image isn't visible? I hate coloring in illustrator... mainly because I don't know how to do it, and I don't have my graphics tablet handy...
try making 3 separate layers. the top layer containing your top image, the bottom layer containing your bottom image, now lock those two layers.
in the middle layer use your pen tool to create a white shape that hides whatever negative space you're trying to hide.
try that, maybe post a pic otherwise to let us see what you're talking about. the way i told you is not the best way, but it is the simplest.
Hmmm... didn't think of doing it that way.... that might be a great idea... too bad I am at work and can't get my hands on Illustrator right now... oh well... once I get done with my image, I will post a picture... thank you deadbunny... Any other suggestions anyone???

That or a clipping mask (which can be much more confusing) is probably the best way
Ouch... that hurts just reading it... what the heck is a clipping mask???
Rather than explain, (a picture's worth a thousand words, etc.) you may want to go here to see how it's done.
(I have to admit, I didn't watch the entire video, but it 'should' explain it) YouTube - Adobe Illustrator: clipping mask spaghetti
I would also think that you may benefit from looking over to the right-hand side and look at the other videos that are on there, that might help you better understand the Layers too.
Whenever I don't understand something, (like every day) I go there and see what I can find, and 99% of the time I find what I need, and weed through the 'junk' to find the 'real' information.
Hey Ricky....i thing i know what are you talking about....and is for shore because you have only the outline of the artwork....and all you have to do is fill the inside of your artwork.Very simple....select the image and then select "Live paint bucket" from the tools area. Then click on the image....after is like in kinder garden.....choose colors and fill the areas you want. After you do that you can put the elements in order from bottom to front....and you won't get the problem again.
Barkone... it was actually one of your images that I was working with. I purchased your artwork from t-shirtfactory.ro and send a couple of emails but didn't get a reply. Thank you for the suggestions. I think the first step is for me to learn how to use Illustrator before I start trying to get cute with my designs... Thank you for the help.
