Default Retouching Images for tee shirts

Hi - I want to create some tee shirts for some friends from existing images, but don't want to wind up with that picture pasted on a shirt look.
What are some ways I can change the image (borders, etc.) to make it look better on a shirt?
Any tips on good software to use?

Thanks,
Pete

There is free software called Gimp, but I still suggest Photoshop for any photo work. Gimp may work for you, tho, so try it out and see if it will work for you.

you can posterize the picture for a cool effect in photoshop...

you can use the filters and masks to make the edges of the photo ripped looking or jagged in photoshop

and the alienskin plugins are cool....
Splat

heres a quick pic with the alienskin splat plugin...

or you can definitely trace em in Illustrator and get em printed on the garment. i prefer this way though, more value to the artwork.

With photographs that's not really possible if what you're going for is a photographic-look.

For raster images like photographs, again, I suggest Photoshop, and for images that can be vectorized nicely I suggest CorelDRAW X3 (Sorry, I don't really like Photo-Paint for rasters).
